Body Paint Swimsuits

Nowadays, looks can be deceiving. The fellow beach-goer whose swimsuit you are admiring may in fact not even be wearing one. With the rise in popularity in body paint swimsuits, the tides are changing on what is appropriate and fashionable swimwear.

Body paint swimsuits really gained notoriety when Sports Illustrated magazine began featuring them in recent years. For the past few swimsuit issues, Sports Illustrated has contained a featured section of body painted models. This addition has become very popular among subscribers and readers alike. Although some critics claim this new section simply allows Sports Illustrated to skirt their self-employed guideline of no nudity. Either way, the featured body paint swimsuits have garnered national attention and curiosity.

What exactly is a body paint swimsuit you ask? Simply, it is when a body paint artist uses an airbrush or sponge to apply latex paint to the body. By using some strategically placed colors and designs, this latex paint gives the illusion of models wearing swimsuits, when in fact they are not. The artist paints multiple coats of latex directly on to the skin. The latex does not wash off, but instead must be peeled off, similar to removing a band-aid.

Body paint can be dated back to over 400,000 years ago and has gained popularity in the past couple of years. The expert on body paint presently is said to be artist Mark Greenawalt, who painted the SI models among others. He says the process takes two hours to complete and on-lookers who stumble across his photo shoots do not even realize the models are essentially naked.

Greenawalt also says it is relatively easy to get started for those interested in at home body paint swimwear. He suggests beginning with children's face paint for practice, and eventually building your way up to the professional level latex paint.

Although it may be feasible to create our own body paint bikinis, it will doubtfully catch on for the general public. It is time consuming and very difficult to paint yourself in a manner to give the impression you are wearing clothing.

Beyond that, although body paint swimsuits appear to look real, upon closer inspection they are very revealing. And unless you are comfortable with nothing between you and the world's eyes but a thin layer of paint, body paint swimsuits are probably not for you. However, they are still visual fallacies which will surely hoard our attention for as long as they are painted.
