Board shorts often are associated with water sports. In fact, the word comes from the use of a board in water sports, like surfing and wakeboarding.
However, board shorts are not strictly for surfer dudes anymore. Although they still are the swimwear of choice for surfers, wake boarders and other water sport enthusiasts, casual beachgoers are starting to wear them as well. Board shorts evolved from regular swimming trunks, without the elasticized waistband. They are usually unlined and have a drawstring and Velcro closure. Since there is a liner, men often will not wear underwear with their board shorts. In the past this has been a problem, since body hair can become entangled in the Velcro closure, causing discomfort for the wearer. However, several companies have started making their board shorts with a neoprene fly. This does not allow the fly to close all the way, but there is still enough stretch and flexibility in the shorts to be taken on and off.
Board shorts come in a wide variety of colors and patterns for men and women. The most popular pattern is the Hawaiian print in a bright neon color. For those who are more modest and tasteful, board shorts can be found in more muted patterns or monochromatic colors.
