Swimsuit Models: Male And Female

When in the market for swimsuits, most of us look to fashion magazines, catalogs and television for the ideal form of beachwear. Beyond looking to these mediums for up to the minute swimsuit wear, what we are really seeing are the quintessential archetypes draped in the bikinis and board shorts, the swimsuit models.
Swimsuit models are described as people with an attractive figure. Though unlike high fashion models, the swimsuit model's height is not a concern. Since most of their work is in print, how high they stand is not a primary concern.
What is a primary concern, however, is the shape and tone of the model's body. Due to the nature of what they are modeling, it is expected their bodies be in top shape with very few flaws. However, the body type of the model is mainly determined by which magazine or company they may be posing for. With the abundance of swimsuit magazines, most can be categorized by what kind of models they feature along with the tone and layout format of the featured photographs.
Perhaps the most famous of the swimsuit magazines is Sports Illustrated. Although Sports Illustrated is not specifically a swimsuit magazine, they do feature a swimsuit issue every year. Since 1964, beautiful women have graced the pages of Sport Illustrated, modeling a variety of swimsuits from athletic Speedos to barely there bikinis. These SI swimsuit issues have launched the careers of many models with the highly coveted cover photo.
The swimsuit models in Sports Illustrated are generally fit looking, with the emphasis being on the feminine appeal of the body. Although they are thin, most have a healthy glow and an overall shapely look about them. The SI swimsuit issue is also pretty tame, with most of the photographs containing relatively clean and inoffensive poses and layouts. This may be the big appeal of Sports Illustrated; they have managed to retain the safe yet somewhat provocative swimsuit modeling objective.
Unlike SI, Hawaiian Tropic swimsuit models have an entirely different appeal. These models are much more scantily clad than those formerly mentioned, and have a much different look. These models are usually very tan, with the emphasis focusing mainly on their bodies and little on the swimsuits.
Their models are fit, yet most appear artificially enhanced with heavy makeup. Hawaiian Tropic also holds over thirty pageants a year nationwide for their swimsuit models, each one hoping to be crowned Miss Hawaiian Tropic. They choose their models and crown their pageant winners based on three criteria: beauty of face, beauty of figure and projection of personality.
Speaking of these criteria, Victoria's Secret has become on of the best known swimsuit modeling publications around today with all of the models possessing all three characteristics. The fact Victoria's Secret grossed 2.4 billion dollars in sales last year is a testament to their pervasive appeal.
Victoria's Secret models are some of the most well known supermodels that exist. With an employee roster containing the likes of Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen and Naomi Campbell, it is not hard to understand the popularity of these models.
Unlike other swimsuit models, Victoria's Secret models are generally very tall and thin, with a gazelle like quality to their bodies. They are svelte and graceful looking, though not as fit or artificially enhanced as previous mentioned models. This can probably be attributed to the prevalence of runway work these models do. Since these models often model the swim wear on the runway, height is an important factor in their appearance.
Victoria's Secret fashion shows were first introduced in 1999 and have snagged more than 1.5 million viewers per show. With live Internet feed of these models advertising the latest in swim wear on the runway, the sales of their bathing suits have skyrocketed. Unlike the above mentioned models, Victoria's Secret models are actually modeling the swimsuits in the attempt to sell the merchandise. And by the looks of their yearly earnings, these models are doing a great job at making their swim wear look alluring.
Unlike any of the aforementioned swimsuit models and magazines, Ebony magazine caters specifically to an African-American audience. With this change of demographic, Ebony features a much different type of swimsuit model. The swimsuit models featured are all different shapes, with emphasis focusing on the beauty of all women's bodies, not just those of thin and tall women.
Many people appreciate this approach Ebony has taken with modeling swim wear. Considering most of the general public does not look like any previously mentioned swimsuit models, it is refreshing to see a magazine like Ebony feature models in body conscious bathing suits with less than flawless figures.
Though most of the swimsuit models that have been discussed are female, there are male models as well. Male swimsuit models are not usually featured in the above publications, but more so in print work and catalogs for certain retailers. The typical swimsuit model usually possesses the same features: toned and muscular bodies, attractive faces and a masculine yet inviting appeal. These swimsuit models may not be as prevalent as the female models, yet there is still a business in men’s swimsuit sales and this business must be represented.
Regardless of body type or physical attributes which may be the focus of certain swimsuit publications, the popularity of swim wear will surely not diminish in the near future. As long as the masses are looking to buy a swimsuit or simply to see swimsuits modeled, there will be a beautiful person gliding down the runway or playfully splashing in the ocean wearing these bits of fabric. Perhaps they will even be wearing the suit you may be showing off on the beach this upcoming summer. Who said swimsuit modeling was just for professionals?
