Eliminating Tan Lines

Let's face it; tan lines are not cute.

People usually do not mean to get tan lines around their breasts and arms, or just above the ankle, but it happens. One day, you realize you have left the house without your SPF 29 and return after a day in the sun to find your body riddled with odd tan lines silhouetting where your clothing fell.

Tan lines occur when an area of the body is exposed to the sun, resulting in a tan, while the rest of the body remains covered and relatively pale in comparison.

There are all sorts of tans. Farmer's tans, not exclusive to farmers, occur when the neck and forearms are extremely tanned or sunburned while the rest of the body is pale. Flip-flop tans occur from repeatedly wearing flip-flops, resulting in a thong-shaped line across the foot. Regardless of how you have obtained your tan lines, they reflect poorly on your personal upkeep and hygiene.

In the past, society has viewed the tan line as a sign of physical labor, with long hours spent in the sunlight. For instance, the farmer's tan is especially unattractive as it can sometimes indicate one has spent many hours laboring in the sun. The same is true for women as tan lines tend to occur around more sexually arousing areas of the body, such as the breasts and buttocks. Can you imagine a seemingly tanned attractive woman taking off each item of clothing, only to reveal she wore a halter-neck bikini with a thong back to the beach? Or a man who mistakenly slept with a bottle of sunscreen on his chest? Tan lines are not attractive, as they reveal a misperceived unkempt nature of the body.

Unless you plan on laying the sun for an additional few hours to even out your tan, there is little you can do to erase tan lines. Most of the time, no one will notice your tan lines. However, there are a few steps you can take to prevent the dreaded tan line.

1. Wear sunscreen. While this should be a no-brainer, many people go without the basic SPF 15 sunscreen. Even if you are only going outside for a few minutes, your skin can become noticeably tanned. Not only does sunscreen prevent hideous tan lines, it is the number one safeguard against premature aging and melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Contrary to what many people believe, a moderate amount of tanning is good for the body. For example, UVB rays stimulate the production of vitamin D. Culturally speaking, women and men with tanned skin are viewed as being healthy and attractive. Too much of a good thing, however, is still a bad thing.

2. Sunbathing. If you are determined to achieve an all-over suntan, the only way to do this is through sunbathing in the nude. Truthfully, it is the only way to prevent tan lines. Nude sunbathing is not permitted on public beaches, but you can certainly do it within the privacy of your own home, a nudist colony or on a tanning bed.

3. Sunless tanning. Out of modesty or necessity, many people are unable to tan in the nude. If this is the case, try a sunless tanning lotion. These gradually add color to the skin giving the appearance of a tan without the use of sun tanning. If you obtain moderate tan lines, you may want to try using a sunless tanning lotion to mask the appearance of your lines. They also are helpful for those who feel uncomfortable sunbathing in the nude; you can combine sunless tanner with sunbathing to achieve a fairly even tan.
