It is not always necessary to wear a bathing suit to be beach-ready; you can just wear one of the many types of beachwear available to men and women today. Beachwear can include any clothing suitable for wearing on a beach and often resembles street clothing.
Back in the Victorian era, beachwear and swimwear were different from the clothing worn today.
With the proliferation of spas and beach resorts springing up along the European coastlines, people soon found the need for modest beachwear. This usually consisted of heavy, woolen swim dresses for women, complete with swimming socks, an apron and swimming cap. Men wore knee-length trousers with socks and sleeveless flannel shirt. Fortunately, however, beachwear has undergone a major transformation in the past century, leaving us with a variety of beachwear for men and women which is made out of everything but wool.
Beachwear is transformable; you can wear it either on the beach or on the street. Beachwear makes it possible to wear board shorts out to dinner – with a shirt and shoes, of course – and then go straight to the beach after dinner.
Though beachwear often is suitable for wearing in the water, many people may forgo this use. In some instances, you may choose to wear beachwear for lounging poolside or on the beach. In other cases, you can wear beachwear instead your regular clothing with no intention of going anywhere near a body of water. This occurs most often in beach towns or any temperate coastal region. When the heat index reaches 115, some people just prefer a pair of board shorts to khaki ones.
Types of Beachwear
Board shorts: Board shorts are the most common beachwear selection for both men and women. They are comfortable enough for daily wear, yet durable and quick-drying. They come in a variety of lengths ranging from thigh-length to just below the knee. They also are available in a plethora of colors. Some may opt for Hawaiian print board shorts in bright or flamboyant colors, but there are more neutral and monochromatic colors and patterns available, too.
Shirts: Though these are less common, they are still good options to wear on or off the beach. Usually when a shirt or top is worn as beachwear, it simply is beach-appropriate clothing like halter or tank tops. However, some companies produce clothing made from the same nylon and lycra-spandex fabric as swimsuits are thus appropriate as beachwear.
Shoes and sandals: Rather than wear sneakers, some people choose to live in flip-flops and sandals during the summer season. When worn on the beach, flip-flops protect feet from hot sand and debris. As street wear, they are a cooler and more comfortable option to sneakers. As swimsuits and beachwear have undergone major changes, so has beach-ready footwear. People no longer have to wear rubber flip-flops and sandals, they have the option of beach-made footwear with bottle-cap openers in the soles, key holders in the heel and state-of-the-art cushioning, like the kind once found only in sneakers.
